I was fortunate to grab my LinkedIn URL early in the process, so mine is simple:
Not everyone will be able to get something that short, but almost everyone can make theirs better.
When you first create a LinkedIn profile, LinkedIn usually gives you a public web address with extra numbers and random letters at the end. It works, but it is not very clean. It is harder to remember, harder to type, and it does not communicate as well.
Your LinkedIn URL is a little like your handle. It should be simple, clear, and easy to share.
Before You Start
Think of the simplest version of your name. Start with your first and last name together, with no spaces.
For example:
johnsmith
If your name is already taken, add something simple that still makes sense.
A few good examples:
johnsmithmarketingjohnsmithcpajohnsmithportland

How To Do It On A Phone
If you are not comfortable using the LinkedIn app, use a computer. It is usually easier.
But if you want to use your phone, here are the basic steps:
- Open the LinkedIn app.
- Tap your profile photo.
- Tap View Profile.
- Tap More near the top of your profile.
- Tap Contact info.
- Tap the edit pencil.
- Tap your Profile URL.
- Tap the pencil next to your custom URL.
- Type your new URL ending.
- Tap Save.
A Few Things To Know
LinkedIn says your custom URL must be 3 to 100 characters long. It should not include spaces, symbols, special characters, or the word LinkedIn.
Custom URLs are first come, first served. If the one you want is not available, just choose a clean variation.
Also, do not keep changing it. LinkedIn limits how many times you can change your custom URL within six months. More importantly, if people already have your old link, changing it too often can make you harder to find.
