Six Judges, One Pattern

The Book of Judges doesn’t just tell one sad story; it tells the same story six times. Israel turns away from God, God lets them feel the weight of their choices, and then God raises up a judge who rescues them anyway. Each time, the rescue is real, but the people’s hearts drift further, showing how badly they need more than just another hero—they need a different kind of King (Judges 2:11–19).

Six times the pattern repeats

  1. Othniel (Judges 3:7–11) – OTH-nee-el (like “OTH-knee-ell”)
Israel does evil, serves the Baals and Asheroth, and God hands them over to Cushan-rishathaim until they cry out. God raises Othniel, the Spirit of the Lord comes on him, he delivers Israel, and the land has rest for forty years (Judges 3:7-11).
  2. Ehud (Judges 3:12–30) – AY-hud (rhymes with “day-hud”)
Israel sins again, so God allows Eglon, the king of Moab, to oppress them until they call out for help. God sends Ehud, who kills Eglon and leads Israel to victory, and the land has rest for eighty years (Judges 3:12–30).
  3. Deborah (Judges 4–5) – with Barak BUH-rock (like “buh-ROCK”)
Once more, Israel does evil, and God gives them into the hand of Jabin (JAY-bin), king of Canaan, and his commander Sisera (SISS-uh-ruh). God uses Deborah and Barak to defeat Sisera, and Israel enjoys forty years of rest (Judges 4:1–24; 5:31).
  4. Gideon (Judges 6–8) – GID-ee-un
Israel turns back to evil, and God lets Midian (MID-ee-un) crush them until they are “brought very low” and cry out. God calls Gideon, the Spirit of the Lord clothes him, and through a small army God rescues Israel, giving the land forty years of peace (Judges 6:1–6, 11–16, 34; 8:28).
  5. Jephthah (Judges 10–12) – JEF-thuh (soft “th,” like in “thin”)
Israel serves the Baals, Ashtaroth, and the gods of surrounding nations, and God hands them over to the Philistines and the Ammonites (AM-uh-nites) until they confess their sin. God raises Jephthah, the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him, and he delivers Israel from the Ammonites, even though his own story is tragically flawed (Judges 10:6–16; 11:1, 29–33).
  6. Samson (Judges 13–16) – SAM-sun
Israel does evil yet again, and God gives them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years. God raises Samson, the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him multiple times as he fights the Philistines, and even in his death, he begins to save Israel, though his life shows how far both leader and people have drifted (Judges 13:1–5, 24–25; 14:6, 19; 15:14–20; 16:28–30).
