Samuel

Samuel: Bible character profile

Lived: Approximately 1100–1020 BCE

While Samuel was growing up in the hill country of central Israel—near what is now Nablus in the Palestinian territories—the ancient Egyptians were putting the finishing touches on the temples of Abu Simbel. Across the Mediterranean, the Greek world was entering its “Dark Ages” following the collapse of Mycenaean civilization.

Samuel’s story began before he was born. His mother Hannah couldn’t have children. Year after year, she prayed at the tabernacle in Shiloh—about 20 miles north of modern Jerusalem. When Samuel finally arrived, she kept her promise and gave him to serve at the temple while still a young boy.

He grew up sleeping near the Ark of the Covenant. One night, he heard his name called. After some confusion, he realized it was God speaking directly to him—something that had become rare in those days.

Samuel became Israel’s last judge and one of its greatest prophets. He anointed both of its first two kings: Saul, who would fail spectacularly, and David, who would become legendary. His willingness to guide a nation through change—even change he didn’t want—makes him one of history’s most overlooked leaders.
