Ruth

Lived approximately 1100 BCE

Ruth came from Moab—a small kingdom in what is now central Jordan, about 50 miles east of Jerusalem. During her lifetime, the great civilizations of Egypt and Babylon were between major empires, and the Trojan War had recently concluded across the Mediterranean.

She married a Hebrew immigrant whose family had fled famine in Bethlehem. When tragedy struck and her husband died, Ruth faced an impossible choice: return to her own people or follow her widowed mother-in-law Naomi back to Israel.

Ruth chose loyalty over safety. She walked away from everything familiar to embrace a foreign culture, a foreign god, and an uncertain future. Her courage caught the attention of Boaz, a respected landowner who eventually married her. Their great-grandson was David, Israel’s greatest king.

Ruth stands as proof that your origin doesn’t determine your destiny—your choices do.
