Malachi

Malachi: Bible character profile

Malachi lived around 430 BC in Jerusalem, during the Persian Empire’s rule over Judah. His name means “my messenger”—fitting for someone whose job was delivering news nobody wanted to hear.

During his lifetime, the Greek philosopher Socrates was teaching in Athens. The Parthenon had been completed just decades earlier. In China, Confucius’s influence was spreading. The world was waking up intellectually—but in Jerusalem, people were spiritually falling asleep.

The temple had been rebuilt for nearly a century, but the initial excitement had faded. Malachi saw priests cutting corners, marriages falling apart, and the wealthy exploiting workers. He called it out—directly, boldly, uncomfortably.

His book is the last word in the Old Testament. After Malachi, four hundred years of prophetic silence followed until John the Baptist emerged in the Judean wilderness—the very messenger Malachi predicted.
