Joshua

c. 1500–1390 BC

While Egyptians were constructing the Temple of Karnak and the Minoan civilization thrived on Crete, a Hebrew slave named Joshua grew up in Egypt watching his people suffer. He would become the man who finished what Moses started.

Born into bondage, Joshua served as Moses’s assistant for forty years of wilderness wandering. He was one of only two spies who believed Israel could take the promised land—and the only general in that era’s history to conquer an entire region without losing a single major battle.

Joshua led his people across the Jordan River into Canaan (modern-day Israel and Palestine). He divided the conquered territory among twelve tribes and governed until his death at age 110.

His name—Yehoshua in Hebrew—means “The LORD saves.” It’s the same name later given to Jesus. Two leaders. Same name. Different kinds of deliverance.
