Isaiah

Isaiah: Bible character profile

Isaiah lived around 740-680 BCE in Jerusalem—the same era when Rome was just a small settlement of farmers on the Tiber River, and the first Olympic Games were being held in Greece.

He served as a royal advisor during one of history’s most turbulent periods. The Assyrian Empire was swallowing nations whole, and tiny Judah (modern-day southern Israel and parts of the West Bank) was trying to survive between superpowers.

Isaiah didn’t just predict the future. He interpreted the present. He told kings uncomfortable truths when flattery would have been easier. He wrote poetry that shaped three world religions.

His book contains some of the most quoted passages in literature—from “they will beat their swords into plowshares” to prophecies about a suffering servant that millions believe pointed to Jesus centuries later.

Tradition says he was martyred under King Manasseh, sawn in two for refusing to stop speaking truth.
